What is Asphalt Milling?

Asphalt milling usually occurs before installing a new asphalt layer or overlay and can be repeated on the same surface many times. It is also sometimes called cold planning, cold milling, or profiling. The milling process entails a milling machine breaking up, crushing, and removing an entire pavement layer ranging from just the surface to milling down to the base.

When the milling takes place, the removed material is simultaneously loaded into the truck for transporting and recycling to make products known as Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) or Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). These products can be reused for a future paving project. This results in a clean and quickly completed construction site.

Lee’s Summit Asphalt upholds a professionally structured milling process that ensures keeping the progress inflow and keeping your business operational at all times.

Why Should You Consider Asphalt Milling?

Sometimes, your parking lots and driveways start to look rough after years of construction. This can either be a sign of expensive repair or minor refurbishing to make it look smooth again.

Below are some of the benefits of asphalt milling.

Provides a New Surface

The biggest benefit of asphalt milling is that it transforms an old, rugged-looking pavement into a new one. The cracks, bumps, and other surface abnormalities are removed, paving the way for a smooth area.

Once the cracks and bumps are resurfaced, the water flow is restored, and the texturing in the resurfacing provides skid control in case of any accidents.

Time and Cost-Efficient

While several reconstruction sites block traffic flow, asphalt milling uses heavy equipment, which speeds up the process and does not cause interruption to the traffic flow. Furthermore, the costs included in asphalt milling are less expensive than building a new one from scratch.

Environment Cautious

Asphalt milling does not emit any hazardous chemicals, fumes, or cause dust pollution, making it an environment-friendly option.

No Maintenance

Asphalt pavements need little to no maintenance as they are already weather-resistant, and the hardening of asphalt only makes it more vital to bear vehicle traffic. Therefore, they don’t need regular resurfacing or refurbishing if there are no major cracks and bumps in them.

Damage-Tolerant

Asphalt milling uses new technology and equipment, decreasing the level of damage to your asphalt pavement’s foundation, which increases its lifespan.

In contrast, the standard removal method uses traditional heavy equipment, which can damage the foundation.

Signs That You Need Asphalt Milling

Here are some of the signs that your pavement needs asphalt milling.

Minimal Fatigue Cracking

Fatigue cracking is a series of interconnected cracks that resembles alligator skin. It is structural distress, caused by overloading thin pavements or a weak aggregate base or subgrade.

Asphalt milling does not address structural issues since it is only replacing the thickness of the pavement removed. Any fatigue cracking should be repaired before a mill and overlay.

Block Cracking

Block cracking is the interconnection of several cracks that develop as the pavement ages. It is identified by the signature-like pattern formed on the pavement from the cracks.

When block cracking is widespread, it is an indication that the pavement is aging. Similar to minimal fatigue cracking, block cracking is a good indication that the pavement needs asphalt milling.

Surface Deterioration

Surface deterioration, also called raveling, is the progressive loss of asphalt material from the pavement surface. This usually happens slowly, and over the entire surface of the pavement. It can be identified by exposed rocks on the pavement surface and the coarse appearance of the pavement.

This can also be a good indicator of the age of your pavement. The more deterioration the surface has, the older the pavement which calls for asphalt milling.

Drainage Issues

When your pavements have drainage issues, they will have areas where water pools after a rainstorm. Flat areas may have multiple smaller areas with puddles of water or there may be a large area where water drains to but does not have a catch basin for water to run into. When you mill the surface at an angle, drainage issues can be improved.
